Review: Los Amigos Invisibles - 'Commercial'

Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles had a big hit with their 2006 album Superpop Venezuela. Critics loved it, fans loved it and it appeared on 2006 Top 10 albums in numerous places.

I was a little surprised by the album's popularity, although I was one of its fans. Los Amigos Invisibles mix Latin rhythms with funk, electronica and a lounge music sensibility. In effect, it's rethought-out disco with a high-tech bend. And while that disco sound has always remained somewhat popular in world dancehalls, who would have thought it could compete with some of today's popular Latin genres and styles?

Well, it did.

Superpop's tracks were a satiric take on popular 1970s tunes. Commercial is an album of original songs composed by Los Amigos and, if anything, it's better than the previous album.

Long live the new disco!
