Description
This workshop will focus on orisha dance. Dance that originated in Africa, but developed in Cuba. Orisha dance symbolizes aspects of nature that correspond with various rhythms. The workshop will focus on the orishas- Ellegua, Ogun, Yemaya, Oya, Oshun, Shango and Obatala. These orishas are manifestations of thunder, lightening, the wind, tornados, the river and the ocean. Will also dance and learn Rumba.
Dress: Women and men are encouraged to attend. Women should bring a long flowing skirt to assist with the interpretation of the dance. One can dance barefoot or with dance shoes. All levels are welcome.
Instructor: Ifé Milligan
Originally from St. Croix , Virgin Islands and of Puerto Rican heritage, Ife began studying Afro- Cuban dance in 1997 in New York City. She studied with master teachers, Richard Gonzalez, Ricardo Colon and Xiomara. In 2001, she continued her study of Afro- Cuban/ Orisha Dance in Washington DC, with master teacher, Oscar Rousseaux. She performed with " Ochunmare" in NYC and " Ache- Moyubba Folkloric Ensemble", in Washington DC.
